Great news! FolkActive and Portsmouth Music Hub are offering a new musical opportunity: Portsmouth Youth Folk Ensemble is on its way.
The ensemble is an exciting development of the Big Ceilidh Weeks which have run in Portsmouth for five years now. Hundreds of young people across the city’s schools have danced together and played for dancing alongside professional folk musicians. This is the next step.
The ensemble is open to all young people interested in playing folk music. This is a different, social and creative way of making music and there’s plenty to engage a wide range of ability. It’s suitable for primary aged children (minimum Grade 1 standard) as well as secondary musicians who want a challenge, and all instruments are welcome.
During the monthly sessions, the group will learn folk tunes by ear and be actively involved in creating arrangements of tunes. There is a tune book for young people to take home as well as handouts with extra music covered. Audio files are also available as follow up after the sessions.
Sessions run once a month on a Sunday, 2.30pm to 4.30pm.
