FolkActive Youth Ensemble

The FolkActive Youth Ensemble (FAYE) is open to musicians aged 11-19 who want to develop their folk music skills in a welcoming and inclusive environment. You’ll receive expert tuition and grow as a musician while having fun, learning to improvise harmonies, compose tunes, and play by ear. You’ll explore folk techniques, including common modes and tune types, enhance your instrumental technique and musicianship, and gain skills in arranging music and performing with confidence.

It’s also a chance to make friends and connect with like-minded people! The ensemble offers plenty of social opportunities to build relationships.

You’ll need your own acoustic instrument and the confidence to hold a tune or musical idea without sheet music.

The ensemble is led by Chris Nichols, educator and founder of the folk band Threepenny Bit.

Rehearsals
The FolkActive Youth Ensemble meets roughly twice per month (five times per term) on Sundays, 10:00 am – 12:00 pm, at Cantell School, Violet Road, Southampton, SO16 3GJ.

The dates for 2025/2026 are:
Autumn Term: 21 September, 5 October, 26 October, 16 November, 30 November
Spring Term: 11 January, 25 January, 8 February, 1 March, 22 March
Summer Term: 19 April, 3 May, 7 June, 21 June, 5 July

Costs
The fee for the year is £156, payable in three termly instalments of £52. There is a small discount for those who pay the full £150 upfront before the first rehearsal. If cost is a barrier, please don’t hesitate to get in touch—we do have funding available.

Performances
You’ll develop your skills through multiple public performances, often collaborating with other local music groups and ensembles. Recent performance highlights include Winchester MayFest, Whitchurch Folk Festival, a ceilidh at the inaugural Southampton Tapestry Festival, and two performances at the English Folk Dance and Song Society’s Youth Folk Takeover Day at Cecil Sharp House in London.

Expectations
To get the most out of your experience, we encourage commitment to attending rehearsals and practising individually between sessions. This dedication will support your growth as a folk musician and strengthen the ensemble. If you need to miss a rehearsal or performance, please let us know as early as possible.
