Dances with live music for over 50s
FolkActive Dances have joined the Zoom world thanks to funding from Sport England through the wonderful Energise Me organisation!
FolkActive Dances were set up for people over 50 to keep active and learn some simple folk dances to suit all levels of activity while meeting new people. Usual monthly sessions include music from members of Jigfoot and Southampton Folk Orchestra, and a caller to guide you through the dances. No partner is needed, it’s fun, you get fitter and make new friends!
Coronavirus restrictions mean we can’t meet physically, but keeping active through dancing to great music is still possible. Using Zoom, we’re enabling dancers to re-connect and enjoy moving to live folk music at home.
We’ve adapted dances for couples and individuals at home, and we’ve become creative about improvising with props instead of partners where necessary! There’s a caller and on-screen lead for the dance moves, and folk musicians providing live music and song.
We ran our first online FolkActive Dance in June 2020, and judging by the feedback we did pretty well!
“The whole session was fun and enjoyable and a different way of exercising, thank you!”
“It was lovely to see so many familiar faces!”
“It was great and it put a big smile on my face. Isn’t it amazing what music and dance can do for you, even if you are doing it all alone?”
This is a great way of connecting safely, keeping active and spreading some joy in these strange times until we can meet physically again.
Try it yourself and see!
Zoom dances take place on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month
