Stepping workshop next Sunday

We’ll be teaching a Southern Stepping workshop next Sunday Feb 1st  from 10:30 to 12:30 in Soberton Village Hall  SO32 3PF.

This is the informal foot percussion which would once have been common across the South Coast. It’s great fun, and we’re  helping to revive and reinvigorate the stepping. No previous experience is necessary. In fact, all you need is good music and a pair of feet and we’ll get you started! Wear hard soled shoes.

If you want to know what the stepping looks like, check out our Sessions page for video clips.

The workshop is part of a series set up by FASH, the Folk Association of South Hants. Our workshop is one of three running on the day: more information on the FASH News page.

If you can’t make it, try our family workshop at the Tudor House Museum  on Feb 8th.

Get playing!

Are you a young person learning an instrument? Do you know a young person learning an instrument? Come along to the Courthouse in Eastleigh on Fridays between 4 and 5.30pm for our weekly folk workshop In Session.  Learn popular session tunes that you’re likely to hear at folk festivals and sessions. It’s a great way to develop your playing and listening skills and make music with other people in a relaxed and informal setting.

Change of week for FolkActive Dances

From January our regular FolkActive Dances will be switching to the second Wednesday of the month. This is to avoid a clash with the U3A folk dance group in Chandlers Ford, which meets on the fourth Wednesday, as we know some dancers would like to come to both.

The first date in 2015 will therefore be Wednesday 14th January from 1.30 pm to 3.30 pm. FolkActive Dances are held at Freemantle Community Centre, Randolph Street, Southampton SO15 3HE.

Joint performance

Earlier this year Cath was asked to lead Four Marks Folk Band, a long-standing group that has been in existence for over 15 years, playing a wide variety of folk music for concerts and barn dances around the local area.

On 28th November Four Marks Folk Band will be joining forces with FolkActive’s own Southampton Folk Orchestra for a joint concert party and dance in Winchester. Each group will play separately before they join up to play together for dancing.

The event is at St Barnabas Church Hall, Fromond Road, Winchester SO22 6DS on Friday 28th November from 7.30 pm. Please bring your own drinks and a small dish for the bring and share supper. There is no charge for entry, a collection will be taken on the night.

Gig for Justice

Southampton Folk Orchestra’s first autumn performance is a charity concert on 8th November. The orchestra is joining Bat 2K, Southampton Ukulele Jam and Saxophony to support Hope for Justice, a charity that works to end human trafficking and slavery. Hope for Justice identifies and rescues victims, advocates on their behalf, provides restorative care and trains frontline professionals to tackle slavery.

The concert is on Saturday 8th November 2014 at Locks Heath Free Church, 255 Hunts Pond Road, Titchfield Common, Fareham PO14 4PG. Tickets are £5 for adults/under 16s, children free, available from Locks Heath Free Church office on 01489 579669 or Cath Crane cath@cranecars.co.uk.

New session for young people

This new FolkActive group for young musicians re-starts at The Courthouse in Eastleigh on Friday January 23 rd.

Whenever folk musicians get together, at folk festivals, in pubs, in each others’ homes, they enjoy playing tunes with each other. In Session will introduce and build a repertoire of popular session tunes that you’re likely to hear at festivals and sessions, and help you to find your own way of playing them. You’ll find more details at  http://www.folkactive.org.uk/activities/in-session/

In Session meets on Fridays from 4.00 pm to 5.30 pm at The Courthouse, Leigh Road, Eastleigh SO50 9QL. £5 per session, and your first session is free.

Primary Schools Ceilidh

There are still a few places for primary schools to join next year’s primary schools ceilidh, organised by the Folk Association of South Hants (FASH) in association with FolkActive. The event is free for schools, all you have to do is arrange transport for the children. You will get a booklet with instructions for all the dances and a CD with the music played by members of Jigfoot, who will also be playing at the ceilidh. If you need help teaching the dances to the children, members of FASH will be happy to come and help out.

The ceilidh is on Wednesday 17th June 2015 at Jubilee Hall, Little Shore Lane, Bishops Waltham SO32 1ED. If your school would like to take part, please contact us soon.
